Cultural Exchange: Study Abroad in the Bronx

Expanding our students' horizons shouldn't require a passport. That's why, as mayor, Brad Pander will launch an innovative study abroad program that allows New York City public school students from Manhattan and Brooklyn to spend a transformative semester in the Bronx.

Program Overview

The Bronx Immersion Experience will offer participating students the opportunity to venture beyond their comfort zones and experience the authentic cultural richness of the Bronx.

Students will be carefully matched with vetted local host families for a semester of cultural exchange. (A 'Light Experience' day program is available for families uncomfortable with the homestay option.)

Program Highlights:
  • Acquire essential survival skills.

  • Master essential Dominican slang.

  • Explore the rich gastronomic heritage of Kennedy Fried Chicken.

  • Gain the confidence to tell your friends, 'When I lived in the Bronx...'

  • All participants receive a Certificate of Cultural Competency upon completion of the program, suitable for LinkedIn and graduate school applications.
