In the bustling streets of New York City, thousands of delivery workers, known as Los Deliveristas Unidos, sustain our city's dynamic food culture and ensure that no New Yorker goes hungry, irrespective of the weather, traffic, or global pandemics.
However, despite their critical role, these workers have faced systemic exploitation, inadequate earnings, and harsh working conditions.
Let's make UberEats, Grubhub, and DoorDash shake in their boots
As Mayor, I will direct the Office of Technology and Innovation to create the "Deliveristas United Platform" (DUP), a food delivery app wholly owned and operated by the delivery workers themselves.
How it will work:
I will allocate $50 million from our economic development budget to fund the app's development, launch, and initial operations.
City employees will spearhead customer service and technological support during the app's infancy, ensuring a smooth rollout.
A portion of the $50 million will be dedicated to comprehensive coding and software engineering workshops for Los Deliveristas Unidos members. This skills-based investment will pave the way for a complete transition of app ownership and operation to the Deliveristas themselves, embodying true worker empowerment.
By intertwining immediate technological advancement with long-term workforce development, we're not just creating an app – we're cultivating a new generation of tech-savvy, empowered workers who will shape the future of New York City's gig economy.
